The department comprises four distinct research groups: Data Engineering, Science and SystemsDistributed, Embedded and Intelligent SystemsData, Knowledge and Web Engineering, and Human-Centered Computing. The division in four groups reflects the department’s research profile and the decentralized responsibility for research, planning and teaching.

The Head of Department is responsible for day-to-day leadership and management of the department, including planning and distribution of work while observing rules of proper governance. The Head of Department must ensure quality and coherence in the research and teaching activities carried out in the department and ensure that the department is capable of providing research-based teaching to the relevant study programmes. 

The Head of Department conducts yearly employee interviews (MUS) with the department’s professors, the  Deputy Head of Department, and the Head of Administration.

The Deputy Head of Department supports the Head of Department in providing effective leadership and management of the Department, and also act as the Head of Studies. The Deputy Head of Department must, together with relevant programme directors and study boards, follow up on evaluations of study programmes and teaching within the areas in which the department provides teaching resources.

The primary tasks of the Head of Administration include organising the job functions of the administration, by:

  • facilitating organisational development
  • continually being up to date on the requirements from the scientific staff regarding the department’s administrative tasks, support and service
  • planning work practices using up-to-date technology
  • facilitating, nudging and nurturing changes in the secretariat
  • defining the framework of the section with regards to the department’s administration, other governing bodies of the university and the university’s administration.

RESEARCH LEADERS

The department’s full professors act as research leaders within their area of expertise. This includes defining and implementing research  goals and strategies in their respective groups, as well as contributing to defining and implementing the department’s research strategy as a whole. Research leaders perform MUS with the scientific staff on their research group. 

The primary responsibilities of the research leader are to:

  • Motivate group researchers
  • Organise research and knowledge transfer/sharing, cooperation and to ensure an efficient research environment
  • Assist researchers in building up research projects
  • Generate research projects
  • Be responsible for the research evaluation every five year
  • Initiate a research strategy for the department and the group in cooperation with the Head of Department
  • Provide the group researchers with access to his/her international network and assist in establishing international cooperation
  • Conduct yearly activities with group researchers determining their research plans

COORDINATORS

The coordinators are responsible for ensuring good cooperation between the research groups and the department. The coordinators refer to the Head of Department and participates in the department’s coordination meetings each fortnight together with the Head of Department, Deputy Head of Department, Head of Administration, management support and the other coordinators. 

The primary responsibilities for the coordinator are to:

  • Inform the research group regularly about both academic and administrative matters (including see to the information flow, e.g. in connection with various communications)
  • Act as the management’s point of contact into the research groups
  • Manage the research group’s grants for local expenses and travel
  • Introduce guests and new employees to the research group (including see to that new employees are welcomed on their first day)
  • Support a good working environment
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of the department’s strategy

The coordinator is appointed by the Head of Department based on a recommendation from the permanent staff in the research group.

Administration


The Administrative Coordinators are responsible for ensuring good cooperation and processing information between the teams and the department.

The Administrative Coordinators refer to the Head of Administration and participate in a weekly briefing with the Head of Department, the Head of Administration and the department's management support.

The primary responsibilities for the team/administrative coordinator are:

  • to standardise and develop smart work procedures in the team 
  • to understand and manage new tasks and routines to be aligned in the organisation and turn these into the day-to-day actions
  • to act as the management's point of contact into the team
  • to support a good working environment
  • to support the implementation and maintenance of the department's strategy
