Please welcome Marcell Fekete from Hungary who joined the DKW as a PhD fellow from the 1st September.
DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH AREA AND FOCUS
- In my research, I work on making language technology available for as many languages as possible. These tools drive most of our everyday interactions with tech, including search engines, voice assistants, and translation.
However, the problem with language technology is the same as with all AI: developing it requires enormous quantities of data. This data is simply not available for the vast majority of the world’s languages. The problem might be alleviated by exploiting the fact that structural similarities exist between the world’s languages. This allows language technology to transfer knowledge from resource-high to resource-poor languages, expanding its own reach.
PROJECTS YOU ARE/WILL BE INVOLVED IN?
- My research is part of Johannes Bjerva’s Multilingual Modelling for Resource-Poor Languages project that is founded by the Carlsberg Foundation.
FUN FACTS
- I’m a big fan of music and I play the guitar and dabble in music production. My other passion is bouldering, and I also enjoy exploring new places whether they are urban or rural spaces.
