Maria-Theresa Oanh Hoang has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in computer science from Aalborg University. Her master thesis was also in relation to the project she is now a part of in her PhD.
DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH AREA AND FOCUS
- My research area focuses on how we can introduce a swarm of drones and robots into search and rescue (SAR) missions and agricultural contexts in an effective manner. Specifically, I’m focussing on the human-computer interaction part of the project, which includes understanding how the users should interact with the system and what they should see in order to grasp the robots' actions.
PROJECTS YOU ARE/WILL BE INVOLVED IN?
- I am involved with the HERD project of Digital Research Centre Denmark (DIREC).
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO CONTINUE YOUR CAREER AT AALBORG UNIVERSITY?
- While doing my thesis, I had the chance to work with actual physical drones, tinker around with them, and feel the gratification when the drones reacted to the commands given through our prototype. Seeing something move in a physical space vs. seeing a simulation on the screen felt immensely satisfying. So when the opportunity came to continue my work and have a first-hand experience with how our partners operate things, I could not pass on that once-in-a-lifetime chance.
FUN AND OTHER FACTS?
- I draw a lot - sometimes 12 hours with no food and water. My wallet also cries whenever I impulse buy stuff I definitely do not need (like my 5th pair of headphones).
